Via Latina is committed to ensuring digital accessibility for all learners, including students and parents with disabilities. We are continually improving the user experience for everyone and applying the relevant accessibility standards.

Our Commitment

We strive to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA. Our efforts include:

Semantic HTML markup for screen reader compatibility
Keyboard navigation support across interactive elements
Color contrast ratios that meet WCAG AA standards
Text-to-speech support for younger learners
Alternative text for all meaningful images
Responsive design for various devices and screen sizes

Young Learner Support

For our youngest students (ages 4–8), Via Latina provides audio-first interaction through our Young Explorer mode, including spoken questions, spoken answer options, and large tappable targets designed for developing motor skills.

Known Limitations

Some arcade games use canvas rendering which may not be fully accessible to screen readers
The interactive Latin Tutor relies on typed input which may be challenging with some assistive devices
Dark-themed app pages (Kingdom, Games) have been optimized for contrast but may need further refinement

How to Set Up Accessibility Features

These features are available right now — here's how to find them.

🔊 Text-to-Speech (Read Aloud)

On any practice page, tap the Voice toggle in the top bar. Questions and answers will be read aloud automatically. Latin uses the Rachel voice; English uses your device's built-in voice.

👶 Young Explorer Mode (Ages 4–8)

Go to Parent Dashboard → Setup & Profiles → Program Level and select Grammar Stage. Then visit Young Explorer for an audio-first experience with large tap targets and no reading required.

🎵 Sound & Music Controls

The floating speaker icon (bottom-right on every page) mutes all sound instantly. For fine-grained control, go to Settings → Sound to adjust background music, effects, and auto-speak separately.

⌨️ Keyboard Navigation

All practice modes support keyboard shortcuts. Press 1-4 to select multiple choice answers, Enter to submit or advance, and Tab to navigate between elements. Skip links are available at the top of every page.

👁️ Visual Settings

Via Latina uses high-contrast text, large fonts, and clear color coding. The Kid Mode toggle on practice pages increases button sizes and simplifies the interface for younger or motor-challenged learners.
